The new National Library of Latvia building or the ‘Castle of Light’ is one of the most complex objects constructed in independent Latvia and inaugurated on 29 August 2014. It presented a challenge both to the builders as well as the library professionals in attaining the requirements of a model 21st century library. The architect of the new National Library of Latvia building design is Latvian born American architect Gunnar Birkerts.
